Some volunteers developed tumors. They could be internal, resulting in the death of the patient. No chemo, radiotherapy or surgery could stop the crazy growing of those maniac cells.
External tumors were ugly, but usually not life threatening.
Anyway, the real mutants had no tumors.
They developed changes difficult to classify, though the colony inhabitants divided them in two clearly different groups.
There was the group of people who became stronger, who recovered miraculously from wounds and broken bones, whose teeth had entered a weird turnover and were always white, shiny and sharp.
Some in this group grew a kind of wings, some of them big and strong enough to allow them to fly short distances.
They were known as the angels.
The other group was similar but they didnt have wings. And people in this group were what the colony considered 'particular'. If a psychiatrist would have had the chance to interview them, he would probably had used the term psychopathic personality.
And these ones were known as the demons.
